CORI Kids Against Cancer Group

Objectives:

CORI Kids Against Cancer is dedicated to helping kids get involved with the California Oncology Research Institute. The group is led and driven by high school and college students, who believe that children are often left feeling helpless when a friend or family member is diagnosed with cancer. This group intends to show kids that they can be proactive in the fight against cancer and to demonstrate the many ways that kids can make a difference.

CORI Kids will raise awareness of cancer and CORI in the high school population through a network of student-run clubs. The first club will be organized at the Archer School for Girls in West Los Angeles. The club will organize and host fundraising events, such as concerts, fashion shows and social gatherings. The proceeds of the events will be given to CORI to support its research and outreach efforts. Additionally, the members of the club will contribute to CORI's outreach program directly by volunteering their time at CORI's educational events and planning outreach events of their own to reach out to the community. Ultimately, CORI Kids will establish a CORI Kids Against Cancer student group at multiple high schools across Los Angeles's Westside and inner-city. The network of student clubs will convene periodically, expanding the reach of CORI Kids's message and creating a supportive community of students united in the fight against cancer.

Simultaneously, CORI Kids will reach out to the college population by hosting a series of fund-raising concerts and developing a collection of film documentaries. Money raised from the concert revenues will be set aside to create a research grant in the name of David Culotti. A committee will review applications and the grant will be given to a top investigator in the field of lung cancer research. The film documentaries will demonstrate to the public that cancer and the emotional suffering that it causes can be better handled in a communal environment. The film screenings will raise funds and, eventually, a bi-annual film festival focusing on the widespread effects of cancer will be organized. Through the film project, CORI Kids hopes to inspire others to share their own pain in the face of cancer, and to find a way to cope with the struggle together.

As the group continues to grow and develop, new activities will be added. We look forward to the many exciting projects that CORI Kids Against Cancer has in its near future and we will provide updates as this new sector of CORI advances. If you know any students who would like to take part in CORI Kids, please contact the CORI office for further details.
